PIVOTAL RESPONSE TRAINING (PRT)

EVIDENCE-BASED BEHAVIOURAL TREATMENT OF AUTISM

WHAT IS PIVOTAL RESPONSE TRAINING? (PRT)

Pivotal Response Treatment® was developed by Drs. Robert and Lynn Koegel at the University of California, Santa Barbara and further developed at Stanford University.

PRT® is one of the few intervention methods for autism that is both comprehensive (as listed by the National Research Council; of the National Academy of Sciences) and empirically supported. It is recognized by the National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders and the National Standards Project.

WHAT DOES PRT DO?

PRT® targets pivotal areas of a child's development, such as motivation, responsivity to multiple cues, self-management, and social initiations. These skills are pivotal because they are the foundational behaviors upon which learners with ASD can make widespread and generalized improvements in many other areas. By targeting these critical behaviors, PRT® results in widespread, collateral improvements in communication, social, and behavioral domains.

Parent feedback and support is provided and you will also learn how to apply those techniques to teach new skills.

WHAT DOES A PRT PROGRAM LOOK LIKE?

Each program is tailored to meet the goals and needs of the individual person and his or her everyday routines. A session typically involves six segments. Language, play and social skills are targeted with both structured and unstructured interactions. The focus of each session changes as the person makes progress, to accommodate more advanced goals and needs. Everyone involved in the child’s life is encouraged to use PRT methods consistently in every part of his or her life. PRT has been described as a lifestyle adopted by the whole family.
