“Language difficulties are fairly common affecting approximately 3-10% of school aged children.”

Speech & Language Delays in Pre-School Children

Receptive language refers to the understanding of spoken words, utterances and discourse of varying length and complexity according to a system of rules. A child who has below normal ability in understanding the meaning of words and spoken information is said to have a receptive language delay.

Expressive language refers to the ability to speak in words, utterances and discourse of varying length and complexity according to a system of rules. A child who has below normal ability in using vocabulary, grammar and complex sentences is said to have an expressive language delay. Expressive language weakness impacts upon a child's ability to express their thoughts in an accurate, organized and coherent manner in both oral and written form.

Language therapy is the best treatment for this kind of difficulty. Our Toronto speech therapists have received specialized training in the Hanen Program which is the most well known model of family focused early language intervention for young children with expressive and or receptive language disorders.
